I get asked recently, “Why do you emphasize having a picture of my smiling face in my portfolio?”

And when I hear the question, I realize I have probably said this a few dozen times across my YouTube videos. 😂

The reason is simple.

When someone meets you for the first time, before they know anything about you, they will form an impression based on how you present yourself.

And if you make a good first impression, it becomes easier to sell to them.

As a freelancer or virtual assistant looking for clients, you are essentially trying to sell yourself. So having a friendly, approachable photo can help.

I learned this from my own experience.

I’m quite introverted and don’t talk to a lot of people. But I’ve noticed that people often seem comfortable around me, even when we’ve never spoken before.

I think a big part of that is because I’m naturally quite smiley.

When I’m out walking, in a store, or just going about my day, if I make eye contact with someone, I naturally smile and nod.

Over time, I realized that something as simple as a smile can make people feel more comfortable around you.

And that’s the same thing I want your portfolio photo to do.

You don’t need to look like a model.

You don’t need a fancy photoshoot.

Just have a clear, friendly photo where you look approachable.

Because before a potential client reads about your skills, experience, or services, they see you.

Give them a good first impression, and they are more likely to look at the rest of your portfolio with a positive mindset.

That’s why I keep telling you:

Put a nice, smiling picture of yourself at the top of your portfolio.

Cheers 🥂
