How crazy will it sound if someone said, “I want to be an engineer, but I will wait until I get a job offer, then I will go to school and get an engineering degree”?
Nobody waits until they receive a job offer before attending school and obtaining the required qualification.
We all go to school first, spend years trying to get the certificate, even though nobody gave us any guarantee of getting a job when we finish.
I get asked questions like:
“If I buy connects on Upwork, will I get a job?” or “If I buy a computer, will I get the job?” or “If I take that course, will I find a client?”
The answer to all of these questions is: Maybe!
If you buy a computer, maybe you will find a client.
If you buy connects on Upwork, maybe you will get hired.
If you take that course and learn the skills, maybe you will find a client.
The only guarantee I can give anyone is that you may succeed if you do those things, but you will definitely fail if you don’t!
One lady asked me something that made me smile and shake my head. She asked, “If I pay for connects, will they give me a job?”
Her question sounded like she was looking for an agreement with Upwork before buying Connects, that if she bought Connects, they would give her a job.
Something I’ve come to understand and accept is: in order to get what everyone is getting, all you need to do is what everyone else is doing. But if you want more than what they have, you’ve got to do more than what they are doing.
If you want something that only 1% of people have, you cannot get it by doing what 99% of people are doing. You’ll get it by doing what the 1% are doing.
I am working for someone who teaches investing, and his method of investing is going out there, driving around, finding properties within a certain criteria, physically talking to the owners, building rapport, and eventually acquiring the property.
The method works, and he teaches his students that exact method. Some of the students go out and do that exact thing, while most of them hire cold callers, do online research, and hand the cold callers a script to call sellers.
The ones who do that rarely succeed because it’s convenient, and since everyone is doing it, it delivers very little result. The ones who go out and do the uncomfortable process usually end up succeeding most of the time.
I find this to be true in almost anything.
Those who choose the comfortable route almost always end up with no result.
And that is why, despite the level of competition on freelancing platforms, it is easy to stand out. Most people are doing the same thing as millions of others, and the moment you go the extra mile and do something more, you WILL stand out.
Just a few weeks ago, I hired a video editor. In the job post, I received dozens of proposals, and they all looked very much the same except one. He did more than just write a proposal, and he clearly stood out from the dozens of proposals that looked the same.
Remember this: opportunities come at random times, and you have to be capable of utilizing them when they come. That is why we go to school to get a certificate, even though we have no guarantee of getting a job.
In order to stand a chance of succeeding in virtual assistance or freelancing, you have to put hours and days into learning several skills.
You have to burn a lot of energy and sometimes money into building a portfolio, creating work samples, and applying to jobs without needing a guarantee.
I think the only guarantee you can really get is this: if you don’t do that, you will NOT make it.
Not everyone is built for the same thing. If you can’t take this risk, then maybe focus on getting a job that is common in your location.
If you really want something different, get ready to do the uncomfortable things and take the necessary risks to get to where you want to go.
Final reminder: Choose your priorities wisely!
Cheers🥂

Thanks for this letter. I intent to put more effort. But I already have a government paid job, a daughter as a responsibility and then venturing into Tech, I know I need to leave my current job but the fear of the unknown is too much for me now. How would you tackle this issue if you found yourself in such situation.
I always advice against letting go of your main source of income before building something reliable. My advice is to hold on to your paid job as long as it takes until you build VA income that is reliable. Wishing you the best of luck!
This is very true Sadiq. No shortcuts in freelancing or VA—just effort, consistency, and taking risks. Thanks for the encouragement!
